A cross-section of residents of Varaganeri in Tiruchi has expressed concern over the poor sanitation conditions in the locality, particularly clogged open drains and garbage accumulation.
According to residents, the open drains have remained uncleared for a prolonged period, leading to the stagnation of wastewater and the emission of odour. They said the situation worsens when it rains, with wastewater overflowing onto roads and inconveniencing pedestrians and motorists.
They have pointed out that a channel near the Sri Elan Kaliamman Temple is choked with silt, weeds and garbage, obstructing the free flow of water. The neglected condition of the channel could lead to water stagnation and create a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
Adding to their concerns is the roadside dumping of garbage by some residents and passers-by. Heaps of waste can be seen at several spots.
“The stench permeates the streets and affects the residents. Stray animals and rodents take refuge in the garbage. These dump sites in the area have turned into burning sites, polluting the air in the vicinity,” said J. Catherine, a resident.
The area has been neglected for long and the Tiruchi Corporation has turned a blind eye to the issue. “The rainy season will bring a vast amount of plastic waste into the drain, clogging it and flooding streets,” she added.
Civic activists have urged the authorities to undertake desilting and cleaning of the drains and the channel, and remove the accumulated garbage. They called for stricter monitoring and enforcement of rules against the indiscriminate dumping of garbage in public places.
