The Forest Department has launched a summer camp for students and the public at the Kurumbapatti Zoological Park to raise awareness about forests and animals.

One of the important tourist attractions in Salem district, the zoo, spread over 76 acres, attracts more than 1.50 lakh visitors every year and houses more than 254 animals, including mammals, birds, and reptiles. The entry fee is ₹50 for adults, ₹10 for children aged 6 to 12. With schools declaring summer holidays for children, the Forest Department announced summer camps at the zoo on five days — May 7, 14, 21, 28 and June 4.

Students of Class III and above can register for the camp by dialling 0427-2912197 or 80563-90717. There is no maximum age limit. The fee for a person is ₹300. Last year, the Forest Department fixed ₹500 for this camp. This year it was reduced to ₹300.

The Forest Department officials said that the camp will be held between 9.30 a.m. and 1.30 p.m. The participants will be taken into the zoo, where officials will explain the salient features of the animals. Later, the participants will embark on a five-km jungle safari in an eco-van of the Forest Department and they will be explained about the importance of forests.

Five students participated in the camp held on May 7. The participants will receive a camp kit, which includes a zoo ambassador certificate, a passport for free visits, a camouflage cap, a notepad, and a pen. Tea and snacks will be provided for the participants. Using the passport for free visits, the participants will be able to visit the zoo five times at no cost, the officials added.
