Tamil Nadu Agricultural University plans to celebrate World Bee Day 2026 on May 20 by organising competitions for students to raise awareness on the role of the winged insects in global food production.
Centered around the theme: ‘Bee Together, for People and the Planet’, the Department of Agricultural Entomology, Centre for Plant Protection Studies will highlight the diverse types of bees and the significance of beekeeping, a TNAU press release said.
The programme includes demonstrations on value-added bee products such as beeswax idols, candles, moisturiser, amla honey, and gulkand.
Children will be involved in various activities like crafting, and nectar and pollen collection games.
Beekeepers will share their challenges, achievements and experiences, and children will be allowed to express their thoughts, highlighting their understanding on bees, the press release said.
The organisers plan to explain how bees are responsible for the pollination of most fruits, vegetables, and agricultural crops, and significantly increase crop yields, paving way for food security.
Prizes and certificates will be awarded to the winners of the competitions. Registration is through WhatsApp: 93635 29576, between 8:30 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., the release said.
