A 27-year-old young woman belonging to the Scheduled Caste community submitted a petition at the weekly grievance redressal meeting held at Thoothukudi Collectorate on Monday, alleging that her husband, who belongs to intermediate caste, had been abducted and confined at a de-addiction and psychiatric rehabilitation centre in Thoothukudi.
According to the petition, the woman, identified as Charumathi from Anna Nagar in Palayamkottai, has married M. Marudhanayagam from Vallanadu Kashba on March 24, 2026 and was residing at Charumathi’s house.
However, when Marudhanayagam visited his village to cast his vote, his parents and relatives allegedly abducted him, she claimed.
Charumathi stated that a complaint had been lodged at Murappanadu police station, and she was informed that her husband had been admitted to the de-addiction and psychiatric rehabilitation centre in Thoothukudi.
She said police personnel had taken her to meet her husband, but she was allegedly prevented from conversing. She alleged that Marudhanayagam does not have chronic alcoholism and expressed fear that he may have been forcibly admitted as part of an attempt related to caste killing based violence.
Claiming that her husband’s life was under threat, she requested the authorities to take action against Marudhanayagam’s father and relatives, under the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act and rescue her husband and sought his rescue safely.
Meanwhile, a police department source said that Marudhanayagam had been admitted to the de-addiction centre for treatment related to alcoholism. The source added that Charumathi had been taken to the centre and allowed to speak with him, and that video recording of the interaction had also been made.
