Pasumai Ulagam, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) working for the welfare of marginalised communities, distributed nutrition kits to women waste pickers and educational materials to their children at a programme held here recently.

A release said women engaged in waste-picking face challenges such as social neglect, health risks and limited livelihood opportunities. To support them, the NGO has been facilitating access to government welfare schemes, organising medical camps, providing nutritional support and safety equipment, and extending educational assistance to their children through scholarships and learning materials.

At the event, nutrition packages were distributed to 50 women waste pickers and educational kits were provided to 30 children. G. Manamohan, founder of Pasumai Ulagam, presided over the programme. T. Sheela, executive committee member, Advocate Revathi of the District Legal Services Authority and Arunkumar, Junior Engineer, District Industries Centre, participated.

A research report on the living and working conditions of women waste pickers in the district was also released.
