Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar on Tuesday (May 19, 2026) said that despite the Gulf conflict pushing up global prices of di-ammonium phosphate (DAP) and urea, the Centre remains committed to ensuring an uninterrupted supply of fertilisers to farmers.

He urged farmers to use fertilisers judiciously, in line with recommendations of agricultural universities to avoid wastage and protect soil health.

Based on prevailing subsidy rates, he said Punjab farmers are likely to receive nearly ₹32,000 crore in fertiliser subsidies this year.

“Wheat and paddy farmers are effectively receiving fertiliser support of around ₹42,000 per acre,” he said at a press conference. “India is importing urea at nearly ₹100 per kg, while farmers are getting it at just ₹6 per kg.“

Mann attacks Centre

Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann accused the Centre of failing on both foreign and economic policy fronts, alleging that the country is facing disorder as a result.

“The Modi government has completely failed on foreign and economic policy, due to which the country is in disarray,” he told reporters in Sangrur. “The Union government failed to anticipate the gravity of the situation arising out of the Gulf conflict, leading to chaos across the country.”

Mr. Mann also said BJP leaders are disconnected from ground realities and merely echo directions issued by the party’s central leadership. He said he had recently raised the issue of DAP supply with the Union Agriculture Minister and had been assured that Punjab’s requirements would be fully met.
