GHMC clears 283 footpath encroachments across city
The Hindu Bureau · 2026-06-20 · via The Hindu: Latest News today from India and the World, Breaking news, Top Headlines and Trending News Videos.

Resuming its footpath clearance drive after a brief hiatus, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) on Saturday conducted a special drive to remove encroachments on footpaths and road margins across various parts of the city. The drive comes on the heels of the Supreme Court’s judgement on the right to walk.

The drive was carried out in coordination with the Traffic and Law & Order Police. GHMC officials said wing-wise schedules were prepared and one major road stretch was selected in each zone, with staff from all circles mobilised to ensure systematic implementation.

The encroachment removal drive was monitored by the GHMC Commissioner, Chief City Planner and Zonal Commissioners concerned while Deputy Commissioners, Town Planning staff and other staff participated.

In Shamshabad Circle, encroachments were removed along the stretch from RGIA Police Station to Mission Compound (Firangi Nala), with clearance of 15 permanent and 56 temporary structures. In Moosarambagh, 16 permanent and 33 temporary encroachments were removed.

In Golconda Circle, authorities cleared 28 permanent and 59 temporary encroachments along stretches connecting Golconda Ward Office, Langar House Cross Road and Bapu Ghat. In Khairatabad Circle, 21 temporary encroachments were removed in the Basheerbagh Flyover area. In Amberpet Circle, 20 permanent and 35 temporary encroachments were cleared between Savarkar Statue, Kachiguda Railway Station and YMCA via Barkatpura.

A total of 283 encroachments, including 79 permanent and 204 temporary structures, were removed during the drive. GHMC stated that 2,620 encroachments have been removed since the special drives began on April 4, 2026, and said similar drives will continue across the city in future too.
