Measurements of land required for the proposed additional platform at Tiruppur Railway Station has been taken, and funding is awaited.
The third platform was sanctioned for Tiruppur Station by the Railways, recognising the need to improve service to the lakhs of industrial workers from across the country living in the large industrial hub.
The platform will be vital for strengthening MEMU services between Tiruppur Station and Coimbatore, Pollachi, Erode and Salem, said N. Subramanian, general secretary, Podanur Train Users’ Association, and member, Divisional Railway Users’ Consultative Committee.
The two existing platforms are being given a makeover under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. The Railway authorities are understood to have expedited the works under the scheme. The project was initiated on August 6, 2023, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation virtually for redevelopment of 508 stations across Indian Railways under the scheme.
Works on elevation, separate pedestrian pathways, circulating areas in main and second entries, and laying of wider lanes for easy vehicular movement, and landscaping remains to be completed, under the ₹22-crore upgrade project for converting the Station into state-of-art transport hub, sources said.
The Railways have planned the facilities such as VIP AC Lounge and Rail Coach Restaurant for the Station.
