India and the Nordic countries on Tuesday (May 19, 2026) decided to elevate their relationship to a Green Technology and Innovation Strategic Partnership, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi held talks with his Nordic counterparts, focusing on clean energy, sustainability, innovation, emerging technologies and other key areas. 

Mr. Modi also said that in this era of global tensions and conflicts, India and the Nordic nations will continue to work together to strengthen the rules-based global order. 

The Prime Minister on Tuesday departed for Italy after concluding a visit to Norway.

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday departed for Italy after concluding a visit to Norway, where India-Nordic ties were elevated to a Green Technology and Innovation Strategic Partnership.

    Modi is visiting Italy on the invitation of his Italian counterpart Giorgia Meloni.

    “Concluding a very fruitful visit to Norway,” he said in a post on X.

    “Held productive talks with Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store and participated in the India-Nordic Summit, where important decisions were taken to deepen cooperation in many areas. I thank the people of Norway, PM Store and the Government of Norway for their warmth and friendship,” he added.

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday discussed ways to further strengthen bilateral ties in areas such as clean energy, trade, sustainability and digitalisation during separate meetings with his counterparts from Iceland, Finland and Denmark.

    The Prime Minister held the meetings ahead of the 3rd India-Nordic Summit.

    During his talks with Iceland Prime Minister Kristrun Frostadottir, Finland Prime Minister Petteri Orpo and Denmark Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, PM Modi discussed the overall trajectory of bilateral relations between India and the three Nordic nations.

    “Had a wonderful meeting with Prime Minister Kristrun Frostadottir of Iceland. India deeply values the friendship with Iceland,” Mr. Modi said in a social media post after the meeting with the Icelandic premier.

    He said the two sides discussed ways to improve ties in areas such as clean energy, fisheries, sustainability, geothermal energy and carbon capture and storage.

    The Ministry of External Affairs defended India’s record on democracy on Monday (May 18 2026), for the second time during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s European tour, over the PM’s decision not to take questions from the press.
