Atleast 11 people were killed after a cement mixer truck collided with a taxi on Monday (April 13, 2026), in Thane district’s Kalyan region in Maharashtra. 

The accident occurred around 11 a.m. on the Murbad–Kalyan road on National Highway 61 near Gavli village. The truck was coming from the opposite direction and rammed into a taxi heading toward Kalyan.

According to Kalyan police, five passengers died on the spot, while the remaining died in the hospital. “We are probing the cause of the accident. The families of the deceased are informed,” said D.S. Swami, Superintendent of Police, Thane Rural.

According to the preliminary information, the police said that both drivers are at fault, as the van was carrying more than the permitted number of passengers, and the truck driver lost control. 

The deceased are identified as taxi driver Prashant Chendne (21), Deepak Gavli (26), Neha Mohpe (16), Mansi Mohpe (20), Jijabai Kembari (60), Prathamesh Mohpe (15), Ananta Pawar (60), and Bhushan Ghorpade (45), the residents of Murbad, Kalyan and Diva. 

An FIR has been filed against the truck driver at the Kalyan police station. After the accident, the villagers and the local police station officers reached the spot and initiated the rescue operation. 

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, expressing condolences, assured financial aid to the deceased’s families, while Deputy Chief Minister (DCM) called the accident “horrific” and ordered an inquiry into the accident, saying a thorough investigation will be conducted.
