A 42-year-old woman and her son were killed in a road accident at Koodal Pudur here on Friday.

Police said Sharmila, a resident of Koodal Pudur area, was working at a petrol station. She was living with her children Pagalbabu, 2, and Deepashri, 14.

In the early hours of Friday, Sharmila and her children attempted to cross the road near Koodal Pudur to reach a bus stop, intending to head to Arappalayam bus stand to travel to Salem. At that time, an unidentified vehicle going at a high speed struck them.

Sharmila sustained grievous injuries and died on the spot. Her son Pagalbabu, who suffered severe head injuries, was rushed to hospital by an ambulance, but he died after failing to respond to treatment.

Deepashri who was critically injured in the accident has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Tallakulam Traffic Investigative Wing police are conducting an investigation regarding this accident.

The public pointed out that accidents occured frequently in Koodal Pudur area. They said since vehicles were driven at high speeds in this zone — which houses a bus stop, school, and market — accidents and fatalities would continue.

The residents of the area demanded installation of speed- breakers.
