National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate Sobha Surendran’s campaign in Palakkad looked formidable on paper, marked by heavy spending, high visibility and energetic cadres. Yet, when the results came in on Monday, the verdict told a very different story.
The scale of the campaign only deepened the shock of defeat, turning it into more than just an electoral loss. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had treated Palakkad as a winnable seat, with even Prime Minister Narendra Modi campaigning for Ms. Surendran. She had also made ambitious promises, including bringing in ₹700 crore worth of development within months of being elected.
