The age profile of Tamil Nadu’s Cabinets in the past 15 years points to a striking shift in the composition — from the senior-heavy 2021 DMK Ministry to a markedly younger 2026 TVK Cabinet.
Data on TVK Ministers, as on May 21, show that the Cabinet of 51-year-old Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has the youngest average age among the three governments examined, while the 2021 Cabinet of M.K. Stalin had the oldest.
The average age of Ministers in the 2026 TVK government stood at 44.6 years, compared to 51.8 years in the 2011 AIADMK Cabinet led by J. Jayalalithaa and 61.3 years in the 2021 DMK Cabinet.
Of the 33 Ministers in the TVK Cabinet, 22 are below the age of 50. The Cabinet featured the youngest Minister among all the three governments: S. Kamali, who has been inducted at just 28 years to represent the Avinashi constituency, followed by 29-year-old S. Keerthana from Sivakasi.
The Cabinet, notably, has nine Ministers in their 30s, followed by a senior tier of seven Ministers in their 50s, three in their 60s, and only one in the 70-80 age bracket — the former AIADMK leader K.A. Sengottaiyan.
The Ministers in their 30s are A. Rajmohan of Egmore, R. Vinoth of Kumbakonam, V.K. Rajeev of Tiruvadanai, M. Vijay Balaji of Erode East, S. Ramesh of Srirangam, K. Thennarasu of Sriperumbudur, J. Mohamed Farvas of Aranthangi, D. Sarathkumar of Tambaram, and K. Vignesh of Kinathukadavu.
Ministers in their 40s comprised the largest group (11 members) in this Cabinet – Aadhav Arjuna of Villivakkam, K.G. Arunraj of Tiruchengode, P. Venkataramanan of Mylapore, R. Nirmalkumar of Thirupparankundram, T.K. Prabhu of Karaikudi, B. Rajkumar of Cuddalore, P. Mathanraja of Ottapidaram, K. Jegadeeshwari of Rajapalayam, D. Logesh Tamilselvan of Rasipuram, V. Sampathkumar of Coimbatore North, and N. Marie Wilson of R.K. Nagar.
DMK Cabinet
In contrast, the 2021 DMK Cabinet of Mr. Stalin, who represented Kolathur at 68 years, was heavily dominated by older leaders. Of its 34 Ministers, 21 were over the age of 60, with 13 Ministers in their 60s, seven in their 70s, and one above 80. Only three were below 50, including Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi of Thiruverumbur and Senthil Balaji of Karur in their 40s, with M. Mathiventhan of Rasipuram as the sole representative in the 30-40 age bracket.
Across all three Cabinets, the oldest veteran was DMK’s Duraimurugan of Katpadi, who was 83 at the time of induction. A significant portion of the 2021 Cabinet sat in the senior brackets, comprising 12 ministers in their 60s alongside 10 in their 50s.
Middle ground
The 2011 AIADMK Cabinet occupied a clear middle ground between the two extremes, operating under Jayalalithaa who represented Srirangam at 63.
Of the 34 Ministers appointed to her Cabinet, 15 were in their 50s, making it the single largest age group. They included notable figures such as 58-year-old K.P. Munusamy from Veppanahalli and 56-year-old Edappadi K. Palaniswami from Edappadi.
The remainder of the Cabinet had 11 Ministers in their 40s, six in their 60s, and two in their 30s, with none above the age of 70.
Meanwhile, the youngest were two members in their 30s: 37-year-old R.B. Udhayakumar from Sattur and 36-year-old V. Senthilbalaji from Karur.
