Citing weakening of campus politics in Kerala as one of the reasons that led to the death of a student in the Kannur Dental College at Anjarakandy due to alleged caste discrimination, Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] State secretary M.V. Govindan said that Kerala should view seriously the lack of space for politics in private and professional colleges. He was speaking to the media after the CPI(M) State secretariat meeting here on Friday.
“Such incidents point to the fact that though the economic foundation of feudalism has been destroyed in Kerala, its ideological foundation continues to survive in the form of casteism. There have been several instances of students being discriminated against on campuses. The student community should attain the strength to expose and resist such tendencies. They should come together to strengthen campus politics in places where it has been weakened or erased,” he said.
