An unidentified gang allegedly assaulted an elderly couple and decamped with gold jewellery and cash after breaking into their house at Manthoppu village in Athangikavanur panchayat near Tiruvallur in the early hours of Monday.
Police sources said the burglary took place around 1.30 a.m. at the residence of farmer Rajagopal Naidu, 75, and his wife Kausalya, 70, who were asleep.
Investigators said the gang gained access by breaking open the entrance lock. The burglars then entered another room and allegedly stole around 60 sovereigns of gold jewellery and ₹5 lakh in cash.
The suspects later entered the bedroom of the elderly couple. Awakened by suspicious noises, the couple confronted the intruders, who allegedly attacked them and snatched Kausalya’s gold chain before fleeing with the valuables.
On being informed, Vengal police reached the spot, registered a case and began an investigation. A sniffer dog squad and forensic experts were pressed into service to collect evidence and trace the offenders.
The police said efforts are under way to identify and apprehend the gang.
