The 2026 Assembly election results have delivered a crushing blow to the Left Democratic Front (LDF) in its traditional stronghold of Kollam, marking the most significant erosion of its power base in over two decades. The once-impenetrable bastions of the CPI and CPI(M) have systematically collapsed, leaving both parties in a state of shock and internal turmoil. For the CPI(M) the decline is particularly stark as the party has been reduced to a single seat in the entire district. This performance mirrors the dark days of 2001, forcing the leadership to confront a reality where their organisational machinery and traditional voter loyalty are no longer guaranteed.
The CPI, which historically anchored the coalition in the district, faced a similarly disastrous retreat. After winning four seats in 2016 and three in 2021, the party has been left with just one representative. The loss of Chathannur to BJP, a seat held for three terms by G.S. Jayalal, is a massive blow that underscores the shifting political grammar of the region. Even more shocking was the defeat of Minister J. Chinchurani in Chadayamangalam, a constituency that has almost exclusively stood with the Left for decades. Internal fractures, including the defection of hundreds of workers to the CPI(M) in Kadakkal due to group feuds and similar exits in Kundara, have clearly bled the party’s strength at the grassroots level.
