Tamizhaga Cauvery Vivasayigal Sangam general secretary P.R. Pandian, on Sunday (May 31, 2026), demanded filing of contempt of court case against Karnataka Chief Minister-elect D.K. Shivakumar for speaking against the Supreme Court verdict on Mekedatu Dam.
On Sunday, farmers led by Mr. Pandian went on a rally via the Jujuvadi checkpost near Hosur in the Krishnagiri district and tried to enter Karnataka as a mark of protest against the Karnataka government’s proposal to construct Mekedatu Dam. But, the police deployed at the border stopped the farmers.

Speaking to reporters, Mr. Pandian said that Mr. Shivakumar, who lost the people’s support, aims for political gain in the upcoming Assembly elections in Karnataka, claiming that the Mekedatu Dam will be constructed. He alleged that Mr. Shivakumar instigates hatred between the people of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Mr. Pandian stressed that the Union Government should not watch this as a mere spectator.

The Tamil Nadu government should file a contempt of court case immediately when the Supreme Court re-opens in June after summer vacation. Congress is part of a coalition government in Tamil Nadu. But Mr. Shivakumar has belittled Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, which is condemnable. “We urge Tamil Nadu Chief Minister to call for all-party meeting, including representatives from farmers’ associations and speed up the next steps in the Mekedatu Dam issue,” Mr. Pandian added.
Stating that farmers’ associations will intensify their protest against the Mekedatu Dam issue, Mr. Pandian said that farmers will picket the Central Water Commission and Parliament to ensure Tamil Nadu farmers’ rights if needed. Tamil Nadu will turn into a desert if the Mekedatu dam is constructed. 25 lakh acres of land will be affected and the water source of five crore people in 32 districts will be affected.

Soon, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka farmers will visit Rasimanal and will pass a resolution to construct a dam at Rasimanal and send it to the Union government, the Supreme Court, and the Cauvery Water Management Authority, Mr. Pandian added.
