The Karnataka State Domestic Workers’ Union (KSDWU) has appealed to Labour Minister Santosh Lad to form the social security welfare board for domestic workers in the State at the earliest.
During a meeting with the Minister, AITUC Domestic Workers’ Union convenors Divya Biradar, Rajalakshmi R., Girija Y.D., and M. Jayamma submitted a petition which included demands such as the creation of a welfare board, specification of minimum wages, social security, job security, paid leave, and menstrual leave for the domestic workers in Karnataka.
Bill delayed
The union, in the letter, pointed out that despite the Minister’s assurances to establish a separate welfare board for domestic workers, the Bill regarding the same was not tabled in the Belagavi and Budget sessions.
“We demand that the State government immediately pass and implement the proposed Domestic Workers’ Social Security Welfare Board Bill,” read the letter.
It is estimated that more than 20 lakh women in Karnataka earn a livelihood by doing domestic work.
‘Extend menstrual leave’
The union pointed out that while the Bill mandates payment of minimum wage to domestic workers, it does not specify the precise amount. Noting that the government is providing social security to unorganised workers in other sectors, the letter said that domestic workers did not receive any of it, including health insurance, provident fund or pension benefits.
