Coimbatore Mayor refuses to display Chief Minister’s phot...
2026-05-20 · via The Hindu: Latest News today from India and the World, Breaking news, Top Headlines and Trending News Videos.

The official photograph of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has not been displayed inside the chamber of the Mayor at the Coimbatore Corporation office.

C. Joseph Vijay, president of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, assumed office as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on May 10 after securing support from several political parties following the Assembly election. Following this, his official photograph was installed at government offices across the State, including the Coimbatore Collectorate and Corporation offices.

However, the Chief Minister’s photograph has not been placed inside the chamber of Coimbatore Mayor K. Ranganayaki.

K. Ranganayaki, a DMK councillor from Ward 29, became Mayor of Coimbatore in August 2024 after Kalpana demitted office. The current elected local body administration is set to continue till January 2027.

While the offices of the Corporation Commissioner and Deputy Mayor have displayed the Chief Minister’s photograph, it is absent inside the Mayor’s chamber. Photographs of former Chief Ministers M. Karunanidhi and M.K. Stalin, along with senior DMK leaders K.N. Nehru and Senthil Balaji, are displayed in the room.

The Chief Minister’s photograph has instead been placed outside the office near the Mayor’s assistant’s room.

Responding to the issue, Mayor Ranganayaki said the Commissioner and Deputy Mayor had kept the Chief Minister’s photograph in their offices, but she had chosen not to place it inside her chamber.

“I cannot remove the photographs of my leaders... Seeing the photographs of our leaders gives me motivation. Until the end of my tenure as Mayor in January, I will not keep the Chief Minister’s photograph inside my chamber,” she said.

She further said that photographs of the Chief Minister had not been displayed in several zonal offices and other local body offices as well.
