The Udupi police have installed speed gun and other cameras on eight different routes in Udupi district, which are connected to Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS), that help in booking cases for overspeeding and other traffic violations. Since Wednesday, images of about 6,000 traffic violations have been recorded.

Udupi Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar said these fixed cameras have been installed on Karkala-Dhoopadakatte, Padubidri-Uchhila, Kaup-Dandatheerta, Kota-Thekkatte, Gangolli-Trasi and Byndoor-Nayanakatte road stretches. More cameras will be fixed on 14 other road stretches soon.

The NHAI has prescribed speed limit for the Karkala-Dhoopadakatte road at 60 kmph, while the speed limits for the remaining five road stretches have been fixed at 80 kmph.

The cameras will record images of over-speeding, triple riding, helmet-less riding, driving without seat belt, using mobile phone while driving, one-way violation and other traffic violations. “Images of 6,000 violations have been generated. The personnel will go through the images in Police Control Room and traffic violation challans will be sent by post to the owner of the violating vehicle.” The fine has to be paid at the police stations in Udupi district within 10 days of the receipt of the challan, he said.

The Udupi SP said work is on to have a separate control room to monitor feed of ITMS cameras and issue traffic challans.
