Deputy Commissioner Kumar on Thursday said the district administration would adopt data-driven strategies to improve road safety and reduce accidents with support from the Centre for Excellence in Road Safety (CoERS), Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras.
The centre, established by the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, uses research and data analytics to identify the causes of road accidents and recommend corrective measures.
Speaking at a meeting with the CoERS officials to discuss Mandya’s road safety priorities, Dr. Kumar said the district, through which four national highways pass, would identify accident-prone black spots and implement preventive measures based on scientific analysis and research inputs provided by the centre.
He said the CoERS would organise a training programme at the MIMS auditorium on May 16 for officials from the Health Department, Police Department and engineers of the Public Works Department to strengthen data-based decision-making in road safety management. He directed PWD officials to make the necessary arrangements for the programme.
Roshan, manager at CoERS, IIT Madras, said the government had identified high-fatality corridors on national highways and that location-specific interventions were being implemented to reduce accidents.
He said the centre was analysing accident data to identify the causes of crashes and would also conduct road safety awareness campaigns to sensitise the public.
Superintendent of Police Shobharani, Executive Engineer of the Public Works Department Purushotham, Regional Transport Officer and other district-level officials were present at the meeting.
