Thiruthangal near Srivilliputtur is a divyadesam. A divyadesam is a Vishnu temple whose deity has been praised by one of the Azhvars. The main deity in Thiruthangal is Nindra Narayana Perumal, said Thenthirupperai Parthasarathy in a discourse. He is in a standing posture, and so is the Goddess Sengamala Nachiar. The vimana is called Somachandra vimana. In the main shrine of Nindra Narayana Perumal, four of His Devis are with Him, namely Sri Devi, Bhu Devi, Neela Devi and Jambavati. Sri Devi is known here as Anna Nayaki, Bhu Devi as Amrita Nayaki and Neela Devi as Ananta Nayaki. There once arose a quarrel among the friends of the Lord’s Consorts. Each had the idea that her friend was superior to the other Devis. Sri Devi did penance here and was declared superior to the rest of His Consorts. The Tamil word for Sri is Thiru. Since Sri Devi stayed in this place, it came to be called Thiruthangal (the place where Sri stayed).

The story of Jambavati’s marriage to Krishna is interesting. Krishna’s friend Shatrajit had a gem called Shyamantika which Krishna liked very much. One day, Shatrajit’s brother went hunting and was killed by a lion. He was wearing the gem at that time. Shatrajit went in search of him and found that he had been killed. The gem was missing. Everyone felt that since Krishna had admired it, He must have taken it. To clear His name, Krishna went looking for the gem. The gem was with Jambavan’s child. Jambavan had killed the lion, and taken the gem for his child to play with. When Krishna tried to take the gem from the child, Jambavan fought with Him. When Jambavan realised that Krishna was another avatara of the Lord, he apologised and gave his daughter Jambavati in marriage to Krishna. Krishna’s grandson Aniruddha married Usha, daughter of Banasura in this kshetra.
