The practice of serving hot snacks such as vadas and samosas on newspaper sheets continues in many tea stalls despite food safety concerns. Printing ink and newsprint are not meant to come into contact with food, particularly hot and oily items, as chemicals from the paper may migrate into the food.

Food safety authorities have repeatedly advised against the use of newspapers for wrapping or serving food. Yet, the practice remains common in many eateries.

The Food Safety Department should conduct regular inspections and strictly enforce the ban on the use of newspapers for serving food in the interest of public health.
