It was in Class IX that S. Sandhya realised that she could pursue higher education only if she was eligible for scholarships. “I realised that we would not be able to afford the fees and that I would need scholarships. So I started studying with focus,” she said.

S. Sandhya, a student of Government Girls Higher Secondary School in Ashok Nagar, has scored 595 marks in the Class XII State Board examinations.

Sandhya was very clear in her objective and knew how much she had studied. She scored centums in accountancy, economics, commerce and Tamil. “The marks are more than I expected. I had focused on the core subjects and was expecting to score around 585 marks,” she added.

The daughter of an autorickshaw driver and homemaker, Sandhya credits them and her teachers for the result.

While she is composed, her father rejoices over his daughter’s achievement. “I cannot describe my happiness. Since morning, I have been on cloud nine. I see the children of labourers getting recognition every year and would wonder about me. To be on the same side now... I am delighted for my daughter. So proud,” R. Saravanan said.

Sandhya decided against using her mobile phone while preparing for the exams. “This helped me retain my focus on my studies. As my brother too was studious, we had a healthy competition. I’d always try to outdo him, which strengthened my determination,” she said.

Acknowledging that her teachers went beyond their call of duty to help her, she said they would hold special tests particularly for her.

“They would be available for me any time of the day to clear my doubts. They would test me with special questions. They offered financial help too,” she said.

Sandhya hopes to become a Chartered Accountant and has already enrolled in the foundation course.

“My family has sacrificed so much for me. I only hope to bring them as much pride and joy as possible,” she added.
