New Delhi, May 21: The Minister of State for Home Affairs, Mr. Om Mehta informed the Rajya Sabha to-day that the Parliamentary Committee was considering among other things, the question of introduction of Hindi in the Supreme Court.
He was intervening in the discussion on a non-official Bill, seeking to amend Article 348 of the Constitution, to provide for the use of Hindi along with English in the Supreme Court and High Courts for delivering judgments.
The Bill was withdrawn by its sponsor, Mr. O. P. Tyagi (JS) following the Minister’s reply.
The Minister listed the progress that Hindi had made as official language. He said three lakh Government employees had been trained in Hindi. Of them, about 17,000 were typists and 4,000 stenographers.
He made it clear that there was no question of Hindi being imposed on anybody. Efforts were being made to ensure the development of regional languages along with Hindi.
Members supported in principle a non-official Bill seeking to amend Article 348 of the Constitution to provide for the use of Hindi along with English in the Supreme Court and High Courts for delivering judgments.
