When the world renowned scientist Albert Einstein appeared before them and spoke about his famous ‘Theory of Relativity’, the 100-odd students of Government Middle School, Avaniyapuram, listened with rapt attention.
The virtual presence of the German theoretical physicist on the school premises on Wednesday was made possible by an alumnus, Karthick Mari Pitchai, founder and CEO of KaaMaa Technologies.
The holographic lifesize image of Einstein explained his ‘Theory of Relativity’ for about three minutes against a visual of a colourful moving train that too caught the imagination of the students.
The students were excited with the session. “We could notice the attention shown by all students,” said C. Saratha, a teacher.
Usually, the attention span of students does not last long while teaching is done through textbooks or blackboard. “Many start to look outside through the windows or doors,” she said.
However, the students’ attention stayed focused throughout the session. “The virtual appearance of Einstein and his explanation helped them easily understand the theory,” she added.
Mr. Karthick had used the holographic image of TVK founder C. Joseph Vijay at an election campaign in Kumbakonam during the recently held Assembly elections and it was well received. “I thought of using the same technology as a tool for communication in education,” he said.
And he wanted to make the beginning at his alma mater. “I did this free of cost though the session comes with content creation using advance device for hologram deployment,” he added.
Mr. Karthick said that a session lasting three minutes to five minutes would cost between ₹30,000 to ₹50,000. The firm was ready for tailor-made content sought by the teachers of the school. However, since it would be a costly affair, he wanted the support of the State Government in making use of the technology to teach students about difficult theories and formulae.
“During the session, when Einstein said that every student could become a scientist, it was a great inspiration and motivation for the students of the school,” Ms. Saratha said.
