The School Education Department in Coimbatore is set to review the performance of students and schools after the district slipped to 13th rank in Class 12 exam results from fourth place, which it had held for the past four years.

Officials said the review would cover pass percentage, subject-wise performance, centum scores and the performance of government, aided and private schools. Particular focus is expected to be given to schools that recorded low pass percentages and students who require additional academic support.
Chief Educational Officer R. Balamurali said the district slipping from fourth rank last year to 13th rank this year could be due to multiple factors. He said the overall difference in pass percentage compared to last year was only 0.8%.
He said a large number of students had appeared for the examination this year, and around 730 students failed in only one subject. A slight decline in the pass percentage of girl students in government schools could also be among the probable reasons for the drop in ranking, he added.
The CEO said the department would conduct block-wise and subject-wise analysis to identify areas requiring improvement. District-level education officials are expected to hold discussions with teachers based on the findings of the review.
Officials said steps would be taken to strengthen coaching and academic monitoring in higher secondary classes. Guidance would also be provided to students regarding higher education admissions and career opportunities.
In Coimbatore educational district, 27,871 students appeared for the examination, of whom 26,977 cleared it, recording a pass percentage of 96.79. In Pollachi educational district, 7,577 students appeared and 7,287 passed, registering a pass percentage of 96.17.
Among schools in Coimbatore district, Corporation schools recorded a pass percentage of 91.31, government schools 93.39, aided schools 96.41, and private schools 99.03.
A total of 158 schools secured 100% results in the district. These included 13 government schools, seven aided schools and 138 private schools
