The pasumai pandhal (green shade nets) installed at important junctions in Salem City got a good response from the public.
Salem district has been witnessing high temperatures since April, while rain lashed in a few parts of the district over the last few days. But, during the day, temperature is registered between 95 degrees Fahrenheit and 102 degrees Fahrenheit. People who are traveling on two-wheelers are unable to wait at traffic signals due to the soaring sun, especially in the afternoon. Considering this, the Salem City Police installed green shade nets at traffic signals near Salem Collectorate and Hasthampatti Junction.
R. Giri, a resident of Periya Pudur, said that the main traffic signals are near Salem Collectorate, Hasthampatti, Four Roads, New Bus Stand, and Five Roads. Except for Salem Collectorate and Hasthampatti junctions, all traffic signals are covered by flyovers, which provides the necessary shade for the motorists. However, at the Collectorate and Hasthampatti junctions, it is a hassle to wait for the traffic signals in the afternoon. He added that the green shade now provides relief to the commuters,” he added.
Salem Corporation Commissioner M. Elangovan said that the Corporation is providing drinking water for the public at eight places, two places each in four zones. Until the end of May, water will be supplied to the public, he added.
