Kerala takes up monsoon preparedness activities
The Hindu Bureau · 2026-06-02 · via The Hindu: Latest News today from India and the World, Breaking news, Top Headlines and Trending News Videos.

Pre-monsoon preparedness activities are being taken up in the State in a coordinated manner and all planned activities are on schedule, Minister for Local Self-Governments K.M. Shaji said in the Assembly on Tuesday (June 2, 2026).

Replying to a calling attention motion moved by Saji Cherian, MLA, he said that a full-fledged review meeting of various department heads and district officials had been called on May 25 and that the work so far has been found to be satisfactory.

Cleaning and monsoon preparedness measures were being carried out by the health and sanitation committees in 17,661 wards. In 13,164 wards, cleaning campaigns were being organised. Over 21 lakh wells across the State had been chlorinated. Review meetings were being held in all districts at the grassroots level also

Mr. Shaji said that pre-monsoon preparedness has been prioritised and coordinated activities will be taken up as infectious diseases are likely to peak in the coming months.

Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan also stepped in to add that the situation in every district was being assessed and monitored closely. He said that National Highway construction work was going on at many places across the State and that the NH officials had been asked to identify all vulnerable spots and take necessary action.

He said that District Collectors and disaster management authorities were taking the lead to hold discussions in every district. Dam safety measures were also being reviewed.

Mr. Satheesan said that the monsoon was expected to be deficient this season. However, the State cannot rule out the possibilities of unusual events like extremely heavy rainfall or cloud bursts, which is part of the larger phenomenon of climate change.

Rain-related warnings are being monitored on a daily basis, going by the State’s experience in 2018 and 2019.

Mr. Satheesan said that the government was doing everything to ensure that Kerala’s disaster management system was made the most efficient one in the country.
