Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) has launched a crackdown on rooftop hotels, bars and restaurants in the aftermath of the recent fire tragedy at a Dattagalli restobar that claimed two lives and exposed glaring lapses in enforcement of safety and licencing norms.

The incident triggered public outrage and drew criticism of multiple government departments for allegedly allowing commercial establishments to operate without mandatory approvals and safety clearances. Following directions from the State government and mounting public pressure, the MCC on Friday conducted a special inspection drive across the city.

The citywide operation covered all nine MCC zones, with officials inspecting 31 establishments for compliance with trade licence conditions, fire safety norms, sanitation standards, public safety requirements and building-use regulations.

According to the MCC, nine establishments were ordered to shut down, while 16 were issued notices or are set to receive notices for various violations. Three establishments were directed to immediately implement fire safety measures, while three others face closure proceedings for non-compliance with fire safety regulations.

The inspection teams comprised Assistant Commissioners, Development Officers, Health Inspectors, Environmental Engineers, Civil Engineers and other civic staff.

Several establishments were found operating without adequate fire safety infrastructure, proper ventilation systems or required permissions. Officials also detected violations related to cleanliness, sanitation and the unsafe use of cellar spaces, according to MCC Commissioner Sheikh Tanveer Asif.

In Zone 4, two rooftop restaurants were closed and notices were issued to three others. In Zone 5, a restaurant was shut down for alleged violations of excise rules, while three establishments were instructed to install fire extinguishers. In Zone 6, three rooftop restaurants were ordered to close. The MCC has also identified three establishments in Zone 3 for closure action on Saturday for failing to comply with fire safety norms, said a press release from MCC.

The civic body said inspections would continue in the coming days and warned of stringent action against establishments that compromise public safety. It directed all hotels, bars, restaurants, rooftop ventures and other commercial establishments to strictly comply with licencing requirements, fire safety regulations and sanitation standards.
