A clash broke out between workers of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) at Kunnam in Perambalur district on Tuesday, causing tension in the town.
The workers fought and hurled stones at each other, even as the police tried to restore order. The trouble started soon after the workers of the two parties assembled at the Kunnam bus stop in the morning to stage protests, though the police had denied them permission.
While the VCK workers were there to protest against DMK senior leader A. Raja’s remarks against the VCK, those of the DMK were there to hold a demonstration to condemn the remarks made against Mr. Raja by a district functionary of the VCK.
The police said the workers of both parties raised slogans, and a quarrel soon broke out. Then, they assaulted each other and threw stones and sticks. The police personnel deployed at the spot intervened to stop the clash. Later, both the groups dispersed, raising slogans.
DMK cadre injured
A DMK member, identified as Ramesh, was injured in the clash. He was admitted to the Government Hospital at Perambalur, the police said.
