In a crackdown on road traffic violations, the police have intensified vehicle checks across the Central zone leading to the registration of 1.48 lakh cases in the past one month against those riding two-wheelers without helmets in nine districts.

The maximum number of the cases — 28,738 — were registered in Tiruchi district followed by Ariyalur with 23,486 cases, Thanjavur with 22,305 cases, Pudukottai with nearly 20,700 cases, and Karur with 18,262 cases. Mayiladuthurai district had the least number of 281 cases being booked for the violation during the period, according to statistics provided by the office of the Central Zone Inspector-General of Police.

The drive resulted in registration of over 6,800 cases of drinking and driving in the nine districts with Karur topping in this category with 1,606 cases, followed by Thanjavur with 1,339 cases, and Tiruchi with 1,318 cases.

A total of ₹2.07 crore has been collected as fine from the offenders during the drive carried out under the instruction of V. Balakrishnan, Inspector-General of Police, Central Zone.

Mr. Balakrishnan has instructed the officials in the district to continue the drive to check accidents, thefts, and traffic violations, said an official release.
