Eighteen Backward Classes (BC) organisations led by R. Krishnaiah appealed to people to participate in large numbers in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s public meeting scheduled to be held on May 10.
Addressing a meeting of the representatives of the BC organisations, he urged that at least one member from every household should attend the gathering.
He said Prime Minister Modi, who belongs to the BC community, has emerged as a globally recognised leader and is steering the country towards development with corruption-free governance. He claimed that the Union Government has been addressing BC-related issues in a phased manner and asserted that a strong show of support at the meeting would help secure long-pending demands of the BC community.
Mr Krishnaiah further highlighted that several constitutional positions, including of Vice President, Governors, Union Ministers and other key offices, have been given to BC, SC and ST representatives under the present dispensation.
Mr Krishnaiah said that after the 1931 census conducted during British rule, the Narendra Modi-led government had taken the initiative to conduct a caste census, responding to a long-standing demand of BC communities.
