Citizens’ Voice Coimbatore petitioned the District Collector seeking strict action against the growing use of hazardous plastic materials and improper plastic waste disposal practices.
In the petition, the organisation said plastic waste had emerged as both an environmental and public health concern, with banned and low-grade plastic materials continuing to be used in shops, eateries, tea stalls and meat counters due to their low cost.
The organisation expressed concern over the use of black plastic containers and low-grade packaging materials for food handling, stating that medical experts had warned of health risks, including cancer and gastrointestinal disorders when such materials are exposed to heat or food.
It urged the administration to focus on regulating plastic manufacturing units instead of targeting only small vendors and called for a ban on hazardous plastic products, strict inspections and penalties for violations.
The petition also sought regular monitoring of meat and mutton stalls to ensure hygiene, proper drainage and safe disposal of wastewater to prevent public health issues.
Further, the consumer body suggested introducing plastic return systems through shops and ward offices in exchange for incentives such as reusable cloth bags to encourage responsible disposal and recycling practices.
