Doctors at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH), Tiruchi, treated a 25-year-old woman suffering from Intermediate Syndrome, a life-threatening complication of severe pesticide poisoning.

According to a press release, the woman, a resident of Tiruchi and a mother of two, was pregnant with her third child when she allegedly consumed pesticide following a family dispute on March 31. She was initially admitted to the Government Hospital in Thuvarankurichi and later referred to MGMGH owing to the severity of her condition.

She was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) with breathing difficulty and memory impairment. As her condition deteriorated, she was placed on ventilator support. During the course of treatment, she was delivered of a stillborn 28-week female foetus.

Doctors later diagnosed her with Intermediate Syndrome, a serious neurological condition that can develop several days after pesticide poisoning. To facilitate prolonged ventilatory support, the medical team performed a tracheostomy.

The patient subsequently developed a severe lung infection and nutritional deficiencies. However, the infection was brought under control through higher doses of antibiotics and comprehensive critical care support, which also helped restore her lung function.

Following continuous monitoring and treatment by the critical care team, the woman gradually recovered and was eventually able to breathe independently without ventilator support. After undergoing 35 days of intensive care, she was discharged in stable condition and returned home, the release added.
