The police on Tuesday (May 19, 2026) identified the man who was found murdered on the bund of Achankulam tank near Neelambur in Coimbatore district on Monday, and arrested one of the two persons involved in the crime.

The deceased was identified as V. Saravanan (41) of Jayankondam in Ariyalur district, who had been residing and working in an industrial unit at A.G. Pudur near Irugur for about 10 years.

Saravanan was found murdered with multiple injuries on the tank bund by fishermen on Monday morning. They had seen three persons proceeding along the bund on a two-wheeler on Sunday night. The fishermen had shone a flashlight on the three as they were quarrelling. The three had reportedly stated that they were discussing a family dispute, after which the fishermen left the spot.

Investigations by the police revealed that Saravanan had picked a quarrel with his co-workers S. Gokul (25) and Harish (29) of Paramakudi under the influence of alcohol, allegedly after the duo made disparaging remarks on his personal life. A woman with whom Saravanan was in a live-in relationship had eloped with another man six months ago, the police said. 

According to the police, Goukul and Harish brought Saravanan to the tank bund on a two-wheeler on Sunday night and assaulted him with stones and hands. He died of multiple injuries.

Gokul surrendered at the Neelambur police station late on Monday. Neelambur Inspector P. Thiyagarajan said that the police were in the efforts to trace Harish.
