A court in Bhopal on Friday (May 29, 2026) sent Twisha Sharma’s husband Samarth Singh and her mother-in-law retired judge Giribala Singh in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) custody for five days, a day after the latter was arrested in connection with the 33-year-old’s death and dowry harassment case.

The CBI produced the two accused before Justice Shobhana Bhalawe’s court, seeking their custody to carry out interrogation. The court granted the CBI their custody till June 2. Earlier, the two were taken for their medical examinations. 

The CBI now plans to question the two accused in detail and verify their claims, especially about the events leading to Twisha’s death.

Mr. Singh had been arrested on May 22 by an SIT of Bhopal Police after being on the run for over a week and his custody was later transferred to the CBI after it took over the case. Ms. Singh was arrested by the central agency on Thursday (May 28) following six-hour-long investigation and questioning at her residence in Bhopal, a day after the Madhya Pradesh High Court quashed her anticipatory bail. 

Twisha Sharma had been found dead at her marital home on the night of May 12 after which her family has alleged mental harassment and dowry demands by her in-laws. Ms. Singh, in turn, denied the charges and accused her daughter-in-law of being addicted to contraband substance while claiming that she was suffering from a mental illness.  

Advocate Anurag Shrivastava, the victim family’s lawyer, said that the investigation into the case was now moving in the right direction and that the “real facts” will now come out.

“They [the CBI] said that ‘we have only arrested Giribala Singh yesterday and we need both [the accused] for a detailed investigation and interrogation. So, they asked for their remand till the 2nd [of June],” Ms. Shrivastava said, speaking to reporters. 

“The accused’s lawyers did not object as they have nothing to oppose. The High Court, while cancelling her anticipatory bail, also took note of the need of her under-custody interrogation,” he said. 

Ms. Singh had been granted an anticipatory bail by a local Bhopal court on May 15, just hours after the police filed an FIR in the case. 

The High Court, however, quashed the local court’s order while noting that various injuries on the victim’s body, including one on her head, were antemortem, suffered before death. 

The High Court said that the trial court did not consider several facts while allowing the anticipatory bail, including that the allegations were not only against Mr. Singh.

“Further, it is also stated that after getting anticipatory bail, the respondent is not cooperating with Investigation Agency though several notices were issued to her for recording her statement and cooperating with the agency,” a single Bench of Justice Devnarayan Mishra had noted.

Meanwhile, the report of the High Court-ordered second autopsy performed on Twisha’s body by an expert panel of AIIMS New Delhi is still awaited. The victim was cremated in Bhopal on May 24.
