The first session of the newly elected 16th Assam Assembly will commence on May 21, an official notification said.

The proceedings will start from 9.30 a.m. at the Assembly Chamber in Dispur, it added.

The notification, issued by the Assam Legislative Assembly Secretariat on Thursday (May 14, 2026) on the basis of an order by the governor, was shared with the media on Friday (May 15, 2026).

"In exercise of the powers conferred by Clause (I) of Article 174 of the Constitution of India, as amended up-to-date, I, Shri Lakshman Prasad Acharya, Governor of Assam, hereby summon the First Session of the Sixteenth Assam Legislative Assembly to meet at 9.30 am on Thursday, the 21st May 2026 at the Assembly Chamber in Dispur," the order said.

Meanwhile, the seniormost MLA of the new Assembly, Chandra Mohan Patowary of the BJP, was sworn in as the pro-tem Speaker by the governor during the day.

Mr. Patowary will administer the oath to newly elected MLAs during the first session of the Assembly.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had said on Wednesday (May 13, 2026) that the four-day session will continue till May 26, with the legislators to be sworn in on the first day.

The new Speaker will also be elected during the session.

The NDA had declared senior BJP legislator and ex-minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass as its candidate for the Speaker's post, a position held by him initially when the first saffron party-led government came to power in the state in 2016.

Mr. Sarma had said the governor will also address the House on the first day of the sitting.

The NDA retained power for a third consecutive term with a two-thirds majority in the recently concluded Assembly polls. The BJP won 82 seats, while its allies AGP and Bodoland People's Front (BPF) secured 10 seats each in the 126-member House.
