Jairam Ramesh presses Centre over Great Nicobar clearances

Congress MP Jairam Ramesh has renewed his objections to the Great Nicobar Island Project in a June 3 letter replying to Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav’s response of May 27. Mr. Ramesh said Mr. Yadav’s reply effectively conceded that the project’s environmental clearance was not based on comprehensive, three-season primary data but on a “single seasonal cycle.” He went further, contending that the underlying institutional studies rested on baseline surveys gathered over only a few weeks, and that historical secondary data held by bodies such as the Zoological Survey of India and the Wildlife Institute of India could not substitute for site-specific primary assessment.

The court has granted him permission. The matter may be heard later this week. The legal team representing TMC has appealed the court challenging the case. Mr. Banerjee’s counsel reportedly argued that the senior TMC leader had no connection to the case and sought protection from any coercive action against him.

Principle, not politics: Pawan Kalyan on his backing for Telangana

In a post on X, Jana Sena chief and Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan says his support for Telangana statehood sprang from conviction not politics, and traces it to his 2009 stand alongside Gaddar. In a post on X on Wednesday (June 3, 2026), Mr. Pawan Kalyan said his commitment to Telangana statehood “is not something that began recently”.
