A court in Madhya Pradesh’s Bhopal on Tuesday (June 2, 2026) sent Twisha Sharma’s husband Samarth Singh, and mother-in-law, retired judge Giribala Singh, to 14 days of judicial custody after their remand with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) ended. 

The CBI presented the two accused before a local court in connection with the 33-year-old model’s death and dowry harassment case. During the remand period, the agency interrogated the two in detail, recreated the sequence of events at their residence using a dummy similar to Twisha Sharma’s weight, and sent the digital evidence for forensic examination. 

The CBI also told the court that it was seeking judicial custody for Ms. Giribala Singh and her son as it would now move to recording statements of other people and witnesses linked to the case, and that it would seek the remand of the two accused again if required. They will be in judicial custody till June 16. 

Twisha Sharma was found dead at her marital home in Bhopal’s Katara Hills on the night of May 12. Her family has accused her husband and mother-in-law of mental harassment, physical abuse, and demands for dowry. 

The probe in the case was launched by the Bhopal police with a First Information Report lodged on May 15, but was later transferred to the CBI on May 25 following the victim family’s allegations of several procedural lapses, and institutional bias by the local authorities. 

Ms. Giribala Singh, a retired district judge, presented her case herself in the court and alleged procedural irregularities on part of the CBI while raising concerns over the recreation of sequence of events on Monday (June 1, 2026). 

She was dropped a few houses away from her doorstep after which CBI officers and the accused walked to her residence, she said. 

The CBI had barricaded the surroundings of the accused’s residence on Monday. The agency and police personnel had had a hard time on May 28 when they took Ms. Giribala Singh with them after arresting her, with scores of media persons stationed outside the residence. 

While alleging that a “media trial” was being conducted in the case, Ms. Giribala Singh also objected to several media outlets gaining access to the footage of recreation of sequence of events, which was carried out on the terrace of her residence where Twisha Sharma was found hanging.

Various camera persons had managed to record parts of the exercise from the rooftops of neighbouring building. 

Ms. Giribala Singh also alleged the media was “following” her and her son, and that their lives were “in danger”, prompting the court to grant them protection. 

“The allegation they [the accused’s side] made was that when the CBI produced them before the court the last time, Samarth’s leg got injured due to some media persons. The court has considered the complaint and proper protection has been granted to both the accused for the judicial custody,” advocate Ankur Pandey, representing Twisha Sharma’s family, told reporters.  

Until about a week before her arrest, Ms. Singh had herself held press conferences and given multiple statements in the media publicly, accusing her daughter-in-law of being a drug addict and a patient with mental illness apart from accusing her parents of “pushing her into glamour world at an early age, earning through her and later abandoning her”. 

Ms. Singh also alleged that her son, Mr. Samarth Singh, was physically assaulted by some lawyers of Twisha Sharma’s family in a Jabalpur court premises on the day he was nabbed by the police. 

Advocate Anurag Shrivastava, representing the victim’s family, denied the charges in court, and said that the allegation could be verified from CCTV footage from the Jabalpur court’s premises. 

“The CBI moved an application stating that it needs to interrogate several individuals and record the statements of many witnesses. The agency also informed the court that all the digital material seized during the investigation has been sent for forensic examination. The CBI is awaiting the forensic report as well as the second post-mortem report,” Mr. Shrivastava said later, speaking to reporters.
