Summer rains drench paddy and maize
2026-05-27 · via The Hindu: Latest News today from India and the World, Breaking news, Top Headlines and Trending News Videos.

Unseasonal rain coupled with gusty winds lashed parts of Karimnagar, Peddapalli and Rajanna Sircilla districts on Tuesday (May 26, 2026) night, drenching paddy and maize produce of many farmers, adding to their woes.

A sudden spell of summer rain dealt a blow to several farmers in Bommakal of Karimnagar rural mandal as their paddy stored at the procurement centre got soaked, leaving them distressed.

Similar incidents were reported from various parts of the combined Karimnagar district as untimely rains played havoc with farmers drenching their grains stocks almost at the fag-end of the procurement season. The distraught farmers sought immediate steps to expedite paddy procurement and buy rain-soaked paddy forthwith.

The asbestos sheets on the roof of a kutcha house in Bommakal were blown away under the impact of strong gales. Meanwhile, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay visited the procurement centre in Bommakal on Wednesday.

He interacted with the farmers, hit by the summer rain, even as they narrated their tale of woe to him, showing the rain-soaked paddy, blaming the ‘delay’ in paddy procurement for their plight.

Later, addressing the media Mr. Sanjay alleged that the delay in paddy procurement pushed the farmers into dire straits. The farmers are bearing the brunt of unseasonal rains and incompetence of the State government to procure paddy promptly.

“If the current dispensation is incapable of procuring paddy from farmers, the Chief Minister should write a letter to the Centre,” he said, wondering why the State government is unable to procure paddy swiftly when the Centre is bearing all expenses of the paddy procurement process.”
