A change of guard is likely in the major constituents of the United Democratic Front (UDF) and their affiliate organisations in Kozhikode, with their district-level functionaries getting elected to the Assembly in the recent elections.
K. Praveenkumar, the incumbent district Congress committee (DCC) president, is now the MLA-designate from Koyilandy. He has already announced that he will resign from the post. V.T. Sooraj, the MLA-elect from Balussery, is the district president of the Kerala Students’ Union, the Congress’ students’ wing. A replacement will have to be found for him as well, though it may take time. According to reports, DCC general secretary Nijesh Aravind and Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee general secretary P.M. Niyas are likely contenders for the post of DCC president.
In the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), its Kozhikode district president M.A. Razak and Muslim Youth League (MYL) State general secretary P.K. Firos have been elected to the Assembly from Kunnamangalam and Koduvally, respectively. Mr. Firos is about to complete his term at the helm of the organisation. His replacement is likely to be announced at the MYL’s State conference. Meanwhile, Mr. Razak told The Hindu on Monday (May 18) that the IUML State leadership was authorised to take a call on the leadership change in the district. It is learnt that T.T. Ismail, the current district general secretary, is his likely replacement. Though State leaders such as Parakkal Abdulla too have been elected as MLAs, there is unlikely to be any change in their organisational roles.
