Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam general secretary (policy and propaganda) K.G. Arunraaj on Thursday said the Governor of Tamil Nadu should act on the basis of the Constitution of India and invite his party, which emerged as the single largest in the recent Assembly election.

Speaking to reporters, Dr. Arunraaj said the Supreme Court of India, in several judgments, has clearly said the majority should only be proved on the floor of the House. He was speaking to reporters after handing over a letter, signed by party president C. Joseph Vijay, to Indian Union Muslim League leader K.M. Khader Mohideen seeking the party’s support to form the government.

The IUML, as part of the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance, has won two seats. Dr. Arunraaj said the IUML leaders had informed the representatives that they would consult their executive committee and take a decision on the request. He said the TVK was hopeful.

To a question on whether he believed there was a conspiracy brewing to stop the TVK from forming the government, Dr. Arunraaj said even before the elections, the party and Mr. Vijay had faced several pressures, and the party emerged as the single largest despite facing all the challenges. “It can be delayed but cannot be denied. Justice will prevail. The people of Tamil Nadu should closely watch,” he said.

While responding to a question on speculation about the AIADMK seeking the support of the DMK to form the government, the TVK leader said it would amount to going against the verdict of the people of Tamil Nadu. “Why did they send out OPS [O. Panneerselvam], alleging he was having discreet ties with the DMK? But what are they doing now? People should think. Both the parties are attempting to dilute the verdict of the people. Some leaders might have stopped such a move. But attempts were made for such an arrangement. People are closely watching,” he said.
