A Border Security Force (BSF) jawan was killed in “unprovoked firing by militants” in Litan area of Manipur’s Ukhrul district, Manipur Police said on Friday (April 10, 2026).
The deceased has been identified Constable Mithun Mandal from Bhagjan Tola village, West Bengal.
Police said that “search operation and area domination by security forces is under way to nab the militants behind the attack.”
The Litan area of Ukhrul district, has witnessed a wave of violence and arson between the Kuki and the Tangkhul Nagas, since February 7, three days after the new Chief Minister was installed. Manipur has three major communities- Meitei, Kuki-Zo and the Nagas. Ukhrul is a Naga majority area.
On May 3, 2023, ethnic violence between the Kuki-Zo and Meitei people erupted in the State, which resulted in the death of 250 people so far and displacement of around 60,000 people.
Manipur chief minister Y. Khemchand Singh condemned the “tragic martyrdom of Constable Mithun Mandal (170 Bn, BSF), who was fatally injured by a bullet from an unknown direction while on patrol at Mongkot Chepu, Ukhrul today.“
He succumbed at RIMS Hospital, Imphal.
“A brave son of West Bengal, his sacrifice in the line of duty will never be forgotten. My deepest condolences to his bereaved family. Prayers for strength and peace in this hour of grief. Om shanti,” Mr. Singh posted on X.
