A 2 MLD sewage treatment plant (STP) constructed to treat sewage entering Singanallur Lake has come under scrutiny, with councillors alleging that the facility has not been functioning properly.

East Zone Chairman Ilakkumi Ilamselvi Karthik said the STP, constructed at a cost of ₹4.5 crore and completed in 2025, was intended to treat sewage entering the lake through an inlet channel near Trichy Road before it was discharged into the water body. However, she alleged that the facility had not been functioning properly and that untreated sewage was continuing to enter the lake.

She said the plant had remained completely non-functional for the past three months and alleged that the operation and maintenance contract had not been awarded.

Ms. Karthik said the 288-acre Singanallur Lake was among the most polluted water bodies in the city and alleged that officials were not adequately monitoring or regulating sewage inflows into the lake.

Ward 60 councillor M. Siva said he had repeatedly brought the issue to the attention of Corporation officials, but no action had been taken. He also said that the formation of a road along the lake had been left incomplete midway through the project.

Responding to the concerns, the Corporation officials said the STP had not functioned earlier due to low inflow. They added that the facility was now operational and treating sewage entering through the inlet channel.

Regarding the road work, the officials said they would assess the status of the project and take further action.
