Kumbakonam All Women Police on Sunday arrested a 62-year-old man under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act for allegedly sexually assaulting a three-and-a-half-year-old girl.
The accused has been identified as Jayakumar, a resident of Kumbakonam in Thanjavur district. According to the police, the crime was committed on May 14 when the victim was playing near her house. Jayakumar, her neighbour, reportedly lured the toddler into his house by offering her biscuits and subsequently assaulted her.
The crime came to light after the child narrated the ordeal to her parents. Based on a complaint lodged by the parents, the Kumbakonam All Women Police registered a case and initiated an investigation.
Following a preliminary inquiry which confirmed the allegations, the police booked Jayakumar under relevant sections of the POCSO Act. He was arrested and subsequently remanded in judicial custody at the Kumbakonam sub-jail.
