The Ukkadam police on May 29, 2026, (Friday) arrested two persons for attempting to snatch a bag containing 1.1 kg of gold ornaments from an employee of a jeweller at the Coimbatore railway station on Wednesday (May 27). The police said that Tirunelveli natives Isakkipandi (23) and Ayyappan (22) were arrested from the city.

The police said that Murugesan and Saravanan, who worked for jeweller Balaji of Ponnaiahrajapuram, arrived at the railway station by a train from Chennai around 6.30 a.m. on Wednesday. Mr. Balaji was waiting in a car close to the rear gate of the railway station to pick them up.

As Mr. Murugesan and Mr. Saravanan came close to the car, Isakkipandi,  Ayyappan and another man approached them on a two-wheeler. One of them attempted to snatch a bag containing 1.1. kg of gold from Mr. Murugesan. However, he responded quickly and threw the bag into Mr. Balaji’s car through an open window. With the snatching bid foiled, the trio fled the spot.

Mr. Balaji lodged a complaint with the Ukkadam police and a team headed by Inspector K. Krishnaleela launched an investigation. The police identified Isakkipandi and Ayyappan based on visuals from surveillance cameras and arrested them.

The police found that two accomplices of Isakkipandi and Ayyappan tailed Mr. Murugesan and Mr. Saravanan from Chennai to Coimbatore on the same train. One of them went to the front gate of the railway station while the second man joined Isakkipandi and Ayyappan at the rear gate to execute the snatching.  

The police are on the lookout for the two men.
