Four persons, including a driver, sustained minor injuries after a TNSTC bus carrying passengers collided with a lorry engaged in bypass road works near Mayiladuthurai on Wednesday.
According to police, the bus bearing route number 7A left the Mayiladuthurai bus stand for Sethur with passengers on board and was proceeding via Anandandavapuram. When the bus reached Veppankulam, bypass road construction works were under way in the area.
Police said that while the bus was moving along a narrow stretch of road, a sand-laden lorry engaged in the bypass road works suddenly crossed its path. On noticing the lorry, the bus driver attempted to apply the brakes. However, the bus collided with the lorry and veered into nearby agricultural land along the bypass road.
The front windshield of the bus was damaged after scraping against the lorry during the impact.
The bus driver, Silambarasan, 38, and passengers Lalitha, 53, Rajalakshmi, 55, and Anjammal, 57, sustained minor injuries. They were rescued by nearby residents and shifted by ambulance to the Government Hospital in Mayiladuthurai for treatment.
Following the incident, bypass road construction work in the area was temporarily halted.
Mayiladuthurai Police are investigating the incident.
