Government schools across Tiruchi district have launched extensive door-to-door admission campaigns ahead of the new academic year in an effort to increase enrolment and reduce dropout rate.
Teachers, school management committee members, and volunteers have been visiting residential neighbourhoods and rural pockets, particularly economically weaker areas, urging parents to admit their children to nearby government schools. The campaign seeks to highlight the improved infrastructure and welfare schemes now available in government institutions, including smart classrooms, free breakfast schemes, spoken English coaching, drawing classes, and computer facilities.
At Posampatti Government High School, which caters to students from Classes 6 to 10, teachers and the headmaster had been canvassing nearby residential streets. The school has around 117 students and five teachers and is equipped with SmartClass facilities and a computer laboratory.
“We went around counselling parents to enrol their children in the school. So far, we have counselled around 25 students, and 19 students have already enrolled in Class 6. We expect more admissions in the coming weeks,” said S. Sarkunan, headmaster of the school.
Officials said the campaign focuses on creating awareness among parents about the various welfare measures provided by the government to reduce the financial burden of education.
Meanwhile, Corporation Primary School in Puthur has installed a flex board in front of the campus showcasing the school’s achievements and inviting admissions for the coming academic year.
The school, which caters to students from Classes 1 to 5, has facilities, including a play area, library, spoken English coaching, and Abacus classes. Despite having only seven classrooms, the school accommodates around 400 students.
“We have sought an exclusive playground for the school and land has been earmarked by the authorities. This will attract parents and help improve enrolment,” P. Amsavalli, headmistress, told The Hindu.
Similarly, S. Sivakumar, an educationalist, along with school management committee members, has planned awareness and admission campaigns in Kattur, Tiruverumbur, Uppilliyapuram, and Venkatachalapuram areas.
