The Cyberabad police commissionerate on Friday (May 22) conducted a large-scale orientation programme for educational institutions as part of a new student mobility initiative aimed at reducing traffic congestion around schools and colleges, while improving transport safety and affordability.

Organised in association with the Society for Cyberabad Security Council (SCSC) at the Engineering Staff College of India (ESCI) Convention Centre in Hyderabad, the programme witnessed participation from more than 750 representatives from over 500 educational institutions across Cyberabad.

Senior police officials, representatives from Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC), civic authorities, Regional Transport Authority officials, education department representatives and transport operators attended the event, which focused on addressing growing concerns surrounding school transport systems and peak-hour traffic congestion.

Addressing the gathering, Police Commissioner M. Ramesh said nearly 2 lakh vehicles gather outside educational institutions across Cyberabad within a 15-minute window during peak school dispersal hours, at times exceeding congestion levels witnessed in the IT corridor rush hour.

He said the pressure created during school drop-offs and pick-ups often leads to unsafe driving, accidents, disputes among parents and stress for children. He described the initiative as a long-term civic mobility reform rather than a short-term traffic management measure.

According to the findings of a joint survey conducted by the police and the Society for Cyberabad Security Council (SCSC), 526 educational institutions covering nearly 4.1 lakh students were physically surveyed. While around 80% of institutions were found to provide transport facilities, only about 30% of students were using them, resulting in a massive increase in private vehicle usage.

Officials said the proposed technology platform would integrate schools, transport operators, parents and civic authorities into a single coordinated framework aimed at encouraging pooled mobility, ensuring compliance and improving accountability.

Serilingampally Zonal Commissioner Narayana Amit said student safety begins the moment a child leaves home and added that civic authorities would work alongside the police to ensure effective implementation of the programme.

Representatives from TGRTC and the education department also stressed the need for coordinated transport planning and stronger road safety awareness among students and parents.

The programme concluded with an interactive session where educational institutions shared suggestions and were briefed on the phased implementation strategy of the initiative.
